Truth Well Told™
The foundation of trust. The enabler of impact. The driver of advantage.
Why Truth Well Told™ Matters
Throughout my career, one phrase has consistently shaped the way I think about communication:
Truth Well Told.
The phrase was made famous by the advertising agency McCann Erickson, where it served for many years as a statement of creative ambition: communicating truth in ways that were engaging, memorable and persuasive.
I have adopted the same phrase, but with a different purpose.
For me, Truth Well Told™ has become a guiding principle for sustainability, leadership and organisational communication. In an age of information overload, misinformation and declining public trust, it reminds us that credibility is built not only by telling the truth, but by telling it clearly, honestly and with evidence.
Truth that is poorly communicated rarely changes behaviour.
Communication without truth ultimately destroys trust.
The challenge is to achieve both.
The Four Principles of Truth Well Told™
Truth Well Told™ is built around four interconnected principles that define effective and ethical communication.
Truth
Communication must begin with evidence. Claims should be accurate, verifiable and proportionate. Facts should never be exaggerated, selectively presented or taken out of context.
Truth is the foundation of trust.
Clarity
Even the strongest evidence has little value if people cannot understand it. Complex ideas should be explained simply without sacrificing accuracy.
Good communication makes difficult subjects accessible while respecting the intelligence of the audience. Clarity creates understanding.
Credibility
Trust depends upon consistency between words and actions. Evidence should be transparent, sources should be acknowledged and uncertainty should be communicated honestly.
Credibility is earned over time and can be lost very quickly.
Impact
The purpose of communication is not simply to inform. It is to improve understanding, support better decisions and encourage positive action.
When truth is communicated clearly and credibly, it becomes a catalyst for meaningful change.
The Trust Challenge
Today’s information environment is characterised by unprecedented volumes of content, competing narratives and rapidly evolving digital technologies.
Organisations face increasing scrutiny from customers, investors, regulators and employees. At the same time, misleading claims, sustainability-washing and misinformation have contributed to declining trust across many sectors.
The solution is not more communication.
It is better communication.
Truth Well Told™ encourages organisations to replace marketing-led sustainability with evidence-led sustainability, ensuring that communication reflects genuine performance rather than aspiration alone.
In doing so, organisations strengthen trust, reduce reputational risk and create stronger relationships with stakeholders.
Where the Model Can Be Applied
Truth Well Told™ can be applied across:
- Sustainability reporting
- ESG communication
- Corporate reporting
- Investor relations
- Leadership communication
- Public affairs
- Crisis communication
- Marketing and branding
- Internal engagement
- Public policy
Its principles are relevant wherever organisations seek to build trust through honest and transparent communication.
Truth creates trust. Clarity creates understanding. Together they create change.

Without trust, sustainable competitive advantage becomes significantly harder to achieve.

Why I Use This Principle
Although the phrase Truth Well Told originated in advertising, I believe its relevance has never been greater.
For much of my career I worked in marketing and communications, helping organisations explain increasingly complex issues. Over time, I came to realise that the greatest challenge was no longer attracting attention. It was earning trust.
Today, I use Truth Well Told™ as a personal mantra for every report, keynote, research paper and book I write.
My aspiration is simple.
Every claim should be evidence-based. Every message should be understandable. Every communication should leave people better informed than before they read it.
In an era where misinformation, disinformation and sustainability-washing have become significant risks, I believe Truth Well Told™ is no longer simply good communication practice.
It is an essential leadership responsibility.
